What does it mean to be human nowadays? I investigate the intricacies of this question through the mirror of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Technology has always accompanied and even shaped the history of humanity, to the point that we now have very sophisticated AI systems that imitate the principles of natural intelligence. Since AI ultimately stems from human design and learns from human data, it can be used for exploring the complexities of being human. For this collection, I interacted with an AI language model (ChatGPT) to have it provide a ranking of ten features of the human condition nowadays and then write prompts for text-to-image AI models (Stable Diffusion, Adobe Firefly) to create corresponding imagery. About Minds on a Digital Mirror
This collection offers a profound reflection on the human condition, utilizing Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a mirror to explore the intricacies of our nature. Throughout the history of humanity, the ever evolving role of technology has constantly been present. From the artificial, yet still close-to-biology agricultural revolution, to the rigid and mechanical precision of machines of the industrial revolution and the positivist ideals of modernity, technology has played a significant role in shaping and accelerating the development of mankind. Technology becomes deeply ingrained in our functioning, acting as natural extensions of our abilities to the point that humans can be described as techno-prosthetic beings.
In the present postmodern era, technology takes on a highly variable, liquid, potentially foreseeable yet ultimately unpredictable character, epitomized first by the development of quantum physics and, more recently, artificial intelligence. This collection aims to capture some of the essence of the contemporary human phenomenon, where, almost like closing the cycle back to our natural architecture, technology attempts to imitate the principles of natural intelligence while leveraging the remarkable computational advancements of recent years.
Amidst the vertiginous maelstrom of technological progress, this collection invites viewers to pause and reflect upon core features, issues and dilemmas of the human existence. It is important to remember that although AI models are highly complex, they ultimately stem from human design and are trained using human-generated data. In this way, they can serve as a vehicle for self exploration. This collection therefore encourages introspection and contemplation on fundamental questions about identity, purpose, ethics, and the intricate interplay between humanity and technology.
As the artist, I play the role of an orchestrator, initiating and guiding the interactions with an AI language model (ChatGPT) to identify, rank and explore ten of various issues, features, and dilemmas that define and shape the human condition in our days. The results of this verbal exploration are then used as prompts for the generation of imagery via text-to-image AI models, such as Stable Diffusion (versions 1.5 and 2.0) and Adobe Firefly (Beta). I finally serve as the curator of the generated visual bank. In this way, the final collection embodies a portrait of the human phenomenon through the lens of AI. Please note that it is not the purpose of this exploration to completely remove the artist from the process, as such a disconnection between the observer and the observed phenomenon is ultimately not attainable.
This collection represents a novel convergence of art and technology, inviting viewers to critically reflect on their place within the ever-changing landscape of human existence. As you engage with the series, your mind will seek and find meaning and interpretation within the presented visuals, influenced of course by your unique biology and personal history.
